The Sistine Chapel Ceiling - in Worthing!
The inside of the Church is decorated with a fabulous full scale copy of the Sistine Chapel ceiling – Michaelangelo’s masterpiece.
On its own it’s remarkable that this unprepossessing building should contain such an unusual treasure. But the story of how it all came about is pretty amazing too.
Worthing artist Gary Bevans was so inspired by a pilgrimage to Rome in 1987 that he asked permission to transform his local Catholic Church into a mini Sistine Chapel. Five years painstaking work followed before Gary’s dream was realised.
The colours are rich and vibrant – and the pictures are much easier to appreciate than the real thing because the ceiling is a lot lower than in Rome!
The Church also contains many other richly decorative items and in our opinion is well worth a trip.
Worthing English Martyr’s Church is just off the A259 in Goring Way, Goring-on-Sea, Worthing BN12 4UH.
You can find out more from this website about how the painting was done or the Church’s website.
