The South Downs Way
Chantry Hill and Sullington Hill
Harrow Hill contains one of the greatest concentrations of flint mines in southern England. Although the flint workings are not as extensive as at the flint mines at Cissbury, a few miles to the south east, Harrow Hill is an important Bronze Age site and it's likely that it was an important place for our ancestors in neolithic times.
Some of the shafts are more than 20 feet deep with numerous precarious galleries fanning out horizontally. It's hard to imagine how dangerous an activity early flint mining must have been. It also shows how strong the desire to possess flint was - the raw material of choice for making cutting tools in those days.
If you're up on the Downs early in the morning you can sometimes catch a magical sight of the rounded top of Harrow Hill protruding from an encircling lake of mist.
A few hundred metres south of Harrow Hill, New Barn Down has evidence of burial tumuli.
As you look down on the tiny village of Sullington to the north, look out for the orange gashes of the sandpits beyond it. There is extensive quarrying here and also at Rock near Washington, a mile or two to the east.
What with the national demand for sand and the extensive growth in housing on the edges of Storrington there's a great deal of pressure on rare sandy heathland down in the valley. An area of heathland called Sullington Warren is looked after by local conservationists as a way of stemming the tide of heathland destruction in Sussex.
