The South Downs Way
Linch Down
Surprisingly, the views to the south are better than those to the north here.
It's possible on all but the bleakest days to get a good sight of the Isle of Wight to the south West and the busy port of Portsmouth and the Millennium Tower - the great naval port's newest landmark.
One of the real delights of this part of the South Downs Way lies down the steep sides of Didling Hill - the tiny Shepherd's Church of St Andrew, Didling, one of the simplest places of worship you are ever likely to see - and all the more spiritual for its simplicity.
Visiting St Andrew's Church involves a detour of around 800 metres and a very steep and tiring climb back up to rejoin the South Downs Way.
The highest point of this section of the South Downs is at Linch Down. There's a trig point at 248 metres in the middle of a field 100 metres or so north of the South Downs Way - fractionally higher than Beacon Hill (242 metres).
