The South Downs Way
Fulking Escarpment
On this part of the South Downs Way you get a really good idea of what they are talking about. The countryside is very open. Trees are planted singly or in tiny strips on the edge of fields.
Beyond that it's really grass, grass, grass.
At Fulking Escarpment there's a wonderful viewpoint with a simple bench and some of the steepest slopes you'll see in West Sussex. The term escarpment barely does this series of hills justice. Fulking Escarpment sometimes seems like a cliff.
Ahead of you is the wonderful church at Edburton, a tiny village that is far smaller now than it was in the middle ages.
To your right are the ramparts of Edurton Castle, such as they are. This motte and bailey castle was constructed by the Normans.
You can see the attraction of the place in terms of military security. If you wanted to pick somewhere to survey as much countryside as possible, then this would be it.
Remember that the Weald was a wooded, mysterious place of danger back then - a place where the Romans had far more trouble exerting their authority than the South Downs or the coastal plain. You get the slight sense of this being a frontier fort, the frontier being that between the South Downs and the wild Weald.
