The South Downs Way
Coulters Dean
This is a fairly tame part of the route. There are few of the spectacular views you will come to expect further east.
The countryside seems more intimate than the wide expanses and windy battering which assail us further along the South Downs Way.
As the South Downs Way passes Coulters Dean Farm you'll notice a large noticeboard which marks the northern tip of an interesting nature reserve.
Coulters Dean was recently nominated as one of the places on the BBC's Breathing Spaces programme.
The nature reserve at Coulters Dean is run by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trusts and is a small nature reserve with a mixture of woodland and chalk grassland, covering 11 acres in total.
Lottery funding and the donations of residents allowed Coulters Dean to be bought in 1996 and looked after for the forseeable future at least.
The species which are able to thrive at Coulters Dean include the much-loved Round-headed Rampion (a real jewel of the South Downs), eleven species of orchid, wild marjoram and a rare snail - the Cheese Snail - or Helicodonta obvoluta. It gets it name because it's snail vaguely resembles a wheel of cheese - very vaguely.
