The South Downs Way
Bury Hill
Apart from the whistle of the wind it's very quiet on this section of the South Downs Way.
This part of the route is very up and down too, as you can tell from the rolling countryside looking back westwards towards Glatting Beacon in the photo above.
There's a particularly steep section of the footpath where Bignor Hill drops down towards Eggbottom Coppice and Westburton Hill and care should be taken, especially on a mountain bike, as the path is quite rutted and there are loose flints all around.
This would not be a good place to fall off your bike.
After that there's a much steadier climb along the western side of Bury Hill.
To the south lies the dense mass of Houghton Forest and The Denture (a corruption of the term Devonshire, meaning a method of fertilising the soil by means of periodic fire raising). Houghton Forest is one of the dullest sections of the Monarch's Way and annoyingly the forest also impedes the views you can enjoy from the South Downs Way in many parts of this stretch of the route.
However, this is no great hardship as before long one of the finest views on the whole of the South Downs Way awaits you as you sweep to the south of the crown of Bury Hill and approach the Arun Valley and Amberley.
