The South Downs Way
Arun Valley
This is one of the two places where the muddy waters of the Weald have cut their way through the chalky mass of the South Downs as they try to find their way to the sea - the other is the Adur Valley at Steyning and Upper Beeding a few miles east of here.
It's a really special place.
If you ever get the chance to be here early on a cold winter's morning, the sight mist filling the valley floor is a truly breathtaking sight.
Another excellent but unlikely time to visit is January when the Arun overflows onto its flood plain, forming an enormous shallow lake.
As well as being an amazing sight, best viewed from Bury Hill looking northwards towards Pulborough, the shallow cold waters of the Arun in winter are a haven for thousands of birds.
These areas are called the Amberley Wildbrooks and Waltham Brooks and lead up to the RSPB Pulborough Brooks wildlife reserve at where the Arun joins the River Rother a few miles upriver.
