Rogate
Many of the buildings in the centre of Rogate date from Tudor times.
In the 16th century Rogate was a major player in the Sussex iron industry. This is reflected in place names in Rogate like Furnace Lane. Much of the fuel used by the iron industry around Rogate came from woodland from nearby South Harting. So much timber was used in this way that the entire landscape to the south of Rogate was changed in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Rogate Village Fete, while not perhaps the biggest summer event of the West Sussex calendar, has one of the proudest and longest histories of any organised entertainment. The history of Rogate Fete can be traced back to the year 1268, when the fete was first held to mark the feast of St Bartholomew.
Rogate parish also contains the tiny hamlets of Hill Brow, Durford, Habin, Rake, Durleighmarsh and Terwick Common. There are two churches in the parish: the beautiful and simple church of St Peter at Terwick and the much grander church of St Bartholomew in Rogate itself.
