Hardham
Hardham has a very interesting church which contains 12th century wall paintings – paintings which therefore predate the renaissance. The paintings at St Botolph's Church in Hardham are thought to have been done by the Cluniac monks from Lewes Priory in East Sussex who produced similar work at the churches at Clayton and Coombes in West Sussex too.
The site of the former Hardham Priory is now a characterful farmhouse which some people think is the oldest house in Sussex. Although many of the original parts of Hardham Priory are completely lost, the refectory and chapter house are still standing. The Priory has a Grade I listed building status and is a scheduled ancient monument.
One further local oddity is the Hardham Tunnel which was used by barges to take a shortcut through the meandering River Arun. There’s a detailed, atmospheric and well written account of the exploration of the Hardham Tunnel called Canoeing Under Sussex.
