Farm Shops
Plaw Hatch Farm Shop
Organic farm produce from a biodynamic farm
Plaw Hatch Farm has a certified organic farm shop at Sharpthorne near Forest Row in the Ashdown Forest. The shop sells meat from Tablehurst and Plaw Hatch Community Farm - a biodynamic farm whose meat has done well in the Soil Association Organic Food Awards.
One of the objectives of the farm shop is to highlight the existence of the farming projects and ethos of the farm itself - Plaw Hatch Farm has a particularly interesting website which tells you about the livestock they look after and farming methods they use.
Grange Farm
Funtington apples and local food
Grange Farm Shop started up as a means of selling some of the fruit and vegetables produced on the farm - and the farm still sells many varieties of apples grown in Funtington, as most other UK fruits. The range of natural foods stocked is now much wider, with locally baked cakes and bread, honey, pies, smoked fish and lots more besides.
The farm also does pick your own fruit and vegetables throughout the summer. The website has a good table which tells you when fresh fruit and vegetables are expected to be available for picking at the farm.
Crumbs of Sussex
Buy local Sussex foodstuffs
Crumbs is a fine food store located in the Shoots Garden Centre near Washington. While not, strictly speaking, a farm shop therefore, as it isn't on a farm, it's as close as dammit - so we've included it on our farm shop page. The shop sells a lot of local produce, including Springs smoked salmon from just along the road at Edburton, of course. The shop places a high priority on food miles and energetically seeks out local food producers.
Around 40 cheeses are sold both at the store and online, some of them quite unusual.
Adsdean Farm Shop
Traditional farm shop near Chichester
Also near Funtington, at the foot of Walderton Down, is the Adsdean Farm Shop.Adsdean was one of the first farm shops to open around Chichester and has had a good reputation for nearly 40 years.
The shop is GM free. While it doesn't go to the same efforts as some farm shops to source only from local suppliers, there is a strong emphasis on British food producers and natural food production in the Adsdean stocklist.
The farm shop isn't open every day and opening times vary, so it's worth checking the farm shop website for opening hours before you set out.
