Boxgrove in West Sussex
There is however one delightful corner which is worth spending some time at and that’s the part of the village around Boxgrove Priory and the village church.
A lot of the old priory is little more than evocative ruins, but the church still remains in active use and the setting has a lovely calmness to it.
Boxgrove is also famous for the discovery in 1993 of Boxgrove Man – the bones of a hominid of the species Homo heidelbergens which is thought to be about 500,000 years old. The quarry where the remains were excavated was bought by English Heritage and who knows what other finds lie there?
